Quitters Never Win's popularity is proof that getting rec'd on dirtybookshelves gets your story an actual audience, lol. The other one is my PL and people have been very interested in critiquing it in comments, because apparently it's not as great as I thought it was.

So that's a pretty good segue into a thing I've been figuring out -- I'm taking a break from writing. I think I'm going to finish reel_merlin but I'm honestly not sure. It's stressing me out, and if I'm not doing it for money then it's not worth the stress. I need to not let my sense of self-worth be based on the response to my fanfiction, which it largely is right now. Trek fandom built it up, bless them, and now I am falling hard flat on my face. And that sucks. And the rest of my self-esteem is not helped by reading other people's amazing romantic fiction, while I sit here alone and unwanted.

Plus, reality calls. You would not believe the amount of knitting I have to do. XB

If the writing is causing you too much stress, it probably is for the best to take a break. I hope it's just a short break and once you get a chance to decompress, you can find joy in writing again. :)

Ron/Hermione was where I got my start 10 years ago, at an archive that was amazingly active and wonderful; it's extant but static now. There are still thousands of R/Hr stories out there, including my own (one of which embarrasses me TO NO END at this point, but we all gotta start somewhere, right?) and some of them are really quite good.

THALIA!! noooooooooooooo your story is wonderful!! I'm reading it on my phone right now and am loving it! it's always going to be a matter of personal taste. I always think, oh, this art is so lovely I don't care if I say so myself because I have spent days on it and it's wonderful and then BAM, someone says it's boring and they would prefer if I did something other than portraits. And in the back of my mind I know that there are people who like it and people who don't, but seeing the comment is enough to punch me in the guts like it was all a waste of time. I get you feeling that if you're not getting paid then it's not worth the stress, but for those of us who do fandom for the mutual flailing and the amazing people we share with, it's worth every second. I love your writing. Look how awesome your pornathon things were- YOU WON!! I mean, don't let a comment thread get you down because there are lots of us out here who love you an your work. I read that one laconic writer gave his writing tip as " don't write the bits that readers skip"- and I can tell you when I read, I skim because I want to know how it ends asap, and honestly for your fic, I STILL ended up not skipping any of it. Yeah, there are hundreds of comments on my C/K fic on LJ, but it was before AO3, and is a tiny pairing to start with, and has gotten even smaller as time passes.
